Free interpreter services

Unread postby Matt » Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:20 pm

Hi facilitators,
One of our members has asked if I know of any free interpreter services (for a Japanese Carer Support Group in Sydney). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Matt

"Hi Matt,

I have organised a workshop next month regards to child protection. The guest speaker is a solicitor parents with intellectual disability.

Now I have struggle with to find a free interpreter services. I have contacted Translating and interpreting service ( TIS National ) however I have run this group voluntary and no ABN number so they can't offer for me to access their free service.

If you have any idea please inform to me and appreciate your response.

Kind regards"

From a facilitator

"HI Matt,
Given that there is rarely any free interpreting services out there that we can tap in to use to run our groups, if I were this group facilitator, I would contact a private Interpreting service eg T&T Interpreting service, to find out their rates / quote, and then to seek funding support from Carers NSW so to enable this group event to occur."

As it is a Japanese Carers support group, could the facilitator ask one of the Japanese carers to do the interpreting. If so, get the volunteer interpreter a small gift in appreciation, such as a small bunch of flowers or box of chocolates.

From a facilitator -

"If the person is running the group voluntarily, reach out to the community and ask if someone can translate voluntarily there are many
people who can do informal translating and will with a small token of appreciation.
A formal interpreter is required if the information is provided officially but for many knowledge based sessions informal voluntary is sufficient.

If it is official ie NDIS they can arrange the interpreter through their service."

From a facilitator -

" I asked my son who lived in Japan for several years.

suggested NAATI which is the national accreditation body. They may know someone. https://www.naati.com.au/

Alternatively, I would also suggest ringing the Japanese embassy/consulate as they may be able to suggest someone. Phone: (02) 9250 1000 http://www.sydney.au.emb-japan.go.jp/
